Apple Replaced 11 Million iPhone Batteries in 2018, Up 11x From 2017

Image
Apple’s CEO Tim Cook revealed to Apple employees during his all-hands meeting that the company replaced 11 million iPhone batteries in 2018. Usually, Apple replaces around 1-2 million iPhone batteries every year. The jump in iPhone battery replacement can be attributed to Apple’s discounted battery replacement program which ran for almost the entirety of 2018. As a part of the program, Apple offered existing iPhone owners to get the battery on their device replaced by paying just $29. This helped in restoring the device back to its original performance which coupled with the improved performance by iOS 12 meant that most users preferred to go this route instead of upgrading to a new iPhone. During Apple’s all-hands meeting January 3, Tim Cook said Apple replaced 11 million batteries under the $29 replacement program, and they’d have only anticipated about 1-2 million battery replacements normally. Apple started running a discounted $29 battery replacement program from early...

iPhone Shipments Declined by 50 Percent in India in 2018

Image
It was not only the poor iPhone sales in China which led Apple to revise its revenue forecast for Q4, 2018. The company also had a poor run in India where it saw iPhone sales decline by a staggering 50 percent in 2018. While Apple shipped 3.2 million iPhones in India in 2017, it is estimated to have shipped around 1.6-1.7 million units in 2018. The slowdown in iPhone sales was attributed to their insanely high prices and attractive offerings from OnePlus which dominates the premium ($400+) smartphone segment in the country. Up until 2017, Apple saw its market share increasing in India at a steady pace. In 2017, it had 2.4 percent of the smartphone market in India and shipped 3.2 million iPhones, up from 2.8 million in 2016. In 2018 though, the company is estimated to have shipped around 1.6-1.7 million iPhones and saw its market share decline to 1.2 percent. The decline brings back iPhone shipments in India to the same level as of 2014 when Apple shipped 1.5 million iPhones. In the sa...

Apple Cuts iPhone XS and iPhone XR Production By Another 10 Percent for Q1, 2019

Image
Apple is reportedly cutting production for the iPhone XR , iPhone XS , and iPhone XS Max by 10 percent for Q1, 2019 of the calendar year. The company has already informed its suppliers about the order reduction. The specific details of the production cut are not yet clear but Apple will now be producing around 40-43 million iPhones in Q1 compared to the original estimate of 47-48 million. The reason behind the cut in orders has again been put on the slow and sluggish iPhone demand in China. Production volume in the January-March quarter of 19 is expected to be cut by about 10% from the original plan, and we informed the manufacturers of countries and regions that are responsible for parts etc. It is because sales are sluggish, especially in China. Apple was reported to have reduced iPhone production orders during the lucrative holiday quarter as well. The company then went on to confirm the slowdown in iPhone sales by revising its revenue estimates for the quarter and lowering it by ...

Chinese Teenager Who Sold His Kidney To Buy iPhone 4 Now Bedridden

Image
Remember the 17-year old  kid Xiao Wang who sold his kidney for around $3,000/RM 13,000 to buy an iPhone 4 and iPad ? His parents could not afford to buy an iPhone which prompted him to take this extreme step. Seven years later, things have not gone as planned for Wang. Wang struck a deal with a black market organ dealer to sell his kidney in return for some serious moolah. The operation was performed at an illegal underground hospital in Chenzhou, China. After the operation, Wang was told he’d return to his normal life after about a week. Sadly that never happened. The operation theatre and the equipment used were not sanitized properly which led Wang to develop an infection on his wound. Worse, Wang never revealed to his family that he had sold his kidney to buy an iPhone. It was only when he became terribly sick from the infection that his parents came to know about his deeds. Sadly, by the time he was taken to a hospital, it was too late as his kidney function had been severel...

Citi Analyst Cuts iPhone XS Max Sales Estimate By Almost Half for Q1 2019

Image
Following other analysts, Citi Research analyst William Yang has slashed the first-quarter production estimates of Apple’s 2019 iPhones due to weakening global smartphone sales. The analyst now believes that Apple will ship 45 million iPhones in Q1 2019, down by 5 million. He notes that the iPhone XS Max will be the one to see its sales fall considerably, with its shipment expected to decline by as much as 48 percent in Q1 2019. Yang is cutting the forecast for the new iPhones because they are “entering a destocking phase, which does not bode well for the supply chain.” Almost all reputed analyst have slashed their iPhone sales forecast by 5-10 million due to a fall in demand. They now expect Apple to sell anywhere between 38-45 million iPhone units in Q1 2019. There have been reports of Apple asking its suppliers to cut down on iPhone XS and iPhone XR orders  due to weak demand. The weak iPhone sales have even forced Apple to offer attractive trade-in discounts in a ...

iPhone XS Max Owner Claims Device Caught Fire While In His Back Pocket

Image
Josh Hillard, an iPhone XS Max owner from Columbus, Ohio claims that his phone caught fire in his pant pocket on December 12. He says that he first noticed a foul smell coming from the rear pocket of his pant before a “large amount of heat” burnt his skin and the trouser pocket along with it. The incident occurred while Hillard was on his lunch break. He first saw green and yellow color smoke billowing from his iPhone XS Max. Hillard has described his ordeal and his experience in the Appl Store in extreme details. “Left no other option, I had to exit the room since there was a female in the break room with me and remove my pants. I ran to the boardroom where I got my shoes and pants off as fast as possible. A VP of our company put the fire out with a fire extinguisher because he heard me yelling.” … “From the time of first noticing the fire and between removal of the pants and taking the phone out of my pocket and placing it outside, I inhaled A LOT...
