CES 2019: Belkin Announces the First Third-Party USB-C to Lightning Cable

Up until now, if you wanted to buy a USB-C to Lightning cable, your only option would have been to buy it directly from Apple. At $29, the cable is extremely expensive and puts it out of the reach for most people. Belkin has now become the first third-party accessory maker to announce a USB-C to Lightning cable.

Belkin will be offering its BoostCharge USB-C to Lightning cables in lengths of 4ft, 6ft, and 10ft. They are made from DuraTek for additional reliability, with Belkin including a leather strap with the cables to prevent them from tangling. The 4ft cable is priced at $24.99, with the 10ft one coming in at $34.99. It will go for sale from this spring.

A USB-C to Lightning cable will allow 2016 and newer MacBook Pro and MacBook owners to connect their iPhone or iPad directly without requiring a dongle. The wire will also allow one to make use of USB-PD fast chargers to charge their iPhone 8 or newer to 50 percent in just 30 minutes.

Belkin’s USB-C to Lightning cable is not cheap but it is only a matter of time before cheaper cables start hitting the market.

Belkin Power

Apart from the USB-C to Lightning cable, Belkin also announced the BoostCharge USB-C battery pack. The 20,000mAh power bank offers up to 30W of output and can fast charge Apple’s iPad Pro or even the Nintendo Switch. There’s an additional 12W USB-A port on the power bank as well. The power bank will cost $29.99 when it launches this spring.

Additionally, Belkin also announced two new BoostCharge USB-C chargers. One of them is meant for home or office use, while the other one is meant for cars. They both offer up to 27W of power and are USB-PD and Quick Charge 3.0 compliant.

YouTube for iOS Gets New Swipe Gesture to Switch between Videos

The latest update to the YouTube iOS app adds a new gesture to the video player to quickly switch between videos. Next time you are watching a video on your iPhone, you can swipe left to go to the next suggested video, while swiping right will take you back to your previously watched video. The gestures will work in both portrait and landscape mode. There’s also a sneak peek feature in which you can partially swipe to the left/right to get a sneak peek of the next/previous video.
